Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania Condemns Unconstitutional War with Iran
Demands Immediate Ceasefire and Passage of Defend the Guard

Warminster, PA – At its 2026 state convention held March 21–22 in Warminster, Pennsylvania, the Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania (LPPA) passed a formal resolution condemning U.S. military involvement in Iran, calling for an immediate ceasefire and peace agreement, and demanding that Congress reclaim its sole constitutional authority to declare war.

The resolution, adopted by delegates at the 2026 convention, takes direct aim at the Executive Branch’s repeated military strikes against Iran — launched without congressional authorization and, in at least one instance, while diplomatic negotiations were still underway. The LPPA notes that multiple American service members have died and hundreds more have been reported injured in the ongoing conflict.

“Preemptive strikes against a foreign nation, launched under the guise of defending military bases on foreign soil, do not constitute a valid justification for war,” the resolution states. “The Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania sees no valid justification for the death and destruction caused by this latest in a long line of disastrous wars.”

The LPPA resolution cites Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution, which grants Congress — not the President — the exclusive power to declare war. The party argues that the pattern of undeclared military conflicts since World War II has created a dangerous precedent that strips accountability from the American people and their elected representatives.

Defending Pennsylvania’s National Guard

The resolution also expresses strong support for the “Defend the Guard Act,” legislation that would prohibit deployment of Pennsylvania National Guard units into active combat overseas without a formal congressional declaration of war. Delegates argued that sending Guard units abroad leaves Pennsylvania citizens more vulnerable in the event of domestic emergencies, natural disasters, or attacks on home soil — directly undermining any genuine America-first strategy.

The LPPA also calls on Governor Josh Shapiro — who swore an oath under Article VI, Section 3 of the Pennsylvania Constitution to support and defend both the U.S. and Pennsylvania Constitutions — to champion and sign Defend the Guard legislation into law.

Key Demands

The resolution formally calls for:

  • An immediate ceasefire and peace agreement in the Iran conflict.
  • Congress to reclaim its constitutional war powers and hold a clear, public vote before committing American troops to any foreign conflict.
  • A halt to any further U.S. military involvement in Iran or any other nation absent an explicit congressional declaration of war or a specific Authorization for Use of Military Force.
  • Passage of Defend the Guard legislation at both the state and federal levels.
