My Take on the “Bus of State”

An analogy called the “Bus of State” was recently popularized by candidate Joe Hauptmann over the course of the 2018 Libertarian National Committee vice chair race. The argument looks persuasive at first glance as a reason why the Libertarian Party should be more accepting of even non-libertarians who at least want to move the country in a slightly more acceptable direction.

This is a question that I have heard being debated many times as Libertarians attempt to create the perfect platform. I have had extensive experience with this process, having served on the national platform committee seven times, and having chaired the LPPa platform committee. The answer to this question will have a major impact on what issues may be appropriate to put into the platform, and on how detailed the planks will be.
